Interesting Facts:

  • After 150 BC, Syria was often identified as either the ancient people of the Assyrian or the Arameans, by the Greeks. As a result, during the Roman Period and today there is debate as to whether these two names are the same. However, recently it has been determined that it is derived from the Assyrian word, "Aššūrāyu".

  • Many believe that the name may have derived from the Hebrew word, 'Širyôn", meaning breastplate.

  • The Arabs modern day word for Syria is "Suriyya".
